Use

Combined heat and power plants (CHP plants) are modular systems for generating heat and electricity. Combined heat and power plants generate electricity with a combustion engine that drives a generator. The surplus thermal energy is used for heating. In this way the efficiency of heat and power generation can be increased. The CogenerationPlant (as opposed to the Cogeneration model) contains an internal control system that is automatically adapted to the characteristics of the use case.

The CogenerationPlant covers the following applications:

  • Basic: The CogenerationPlant is operated in heat-controlled mode as standard. The setpoint temperature (▶TRef) and the actual temperature (▶TAct) of the heat sink are decisive for this.

  • Electrical led: Alternatively, the CogenerationPlant can be operated in electricity-led mode. In this case, an electrical target output (▶PRef) must be specified.

Parameters and Connectors

In the standard case, the CogenerationPlant consists of a Cogeneration and a HeatController model. The heat sink must be connected via the ▶Flow and ▶Return connector. In addition, the electrical grid is connected via ▶MVGrid and the setpoint temperature (▶TRef) and the actual temperature (▶TAct) of the heat sink has to be connected.

The ConstantPowerOutput, RelModMin and nUnits parameters can be used in the same way as for the Cogeneration.

The GridType can also be adjusted accordingly.

The internal HeatController can be parameterized via the Controller Properties. Here, TFlowMax and TReturnMax ensure an emergency shutdown of the CogenerationPlant, qvMax defines the maximum volume flow on the heat sink side and deltaTActRefLow and deltaTActRefUp define the limits for switching the CogenerationPlant on and off.

In this case, an electrical target output (▶PRef) must be specified instead of the setpoint temperature (▶TRef) and the actual temperature (▶TAct). The CogenerationPlant is controlled via a PowerController instead of the HeatController. Accordingly, the parameters of the tab Controller Properties must be specified. In addition, the target temperature of the heat extraction (TFlowWasteHeat) must be defined. The SwitchOnPower parameter serves as the switch-on limit. If the requested electrical power ▶PRef exceeds or falls below this limit (taking the hysteresis PDiffCtrl into consideration), the controller turns the plant on or off, respectively.
