Use

The PV converter model is necessary to couple a photovoltaic system model with an AC-grid. The grid connection can be defined as a 3-phase or single-phase connection. Internally, the model either uses a B6 - or B2-converter model.

Recommendation: Use the photovoltaics power plant as it includes a pv converter model already or the newer version of this model under local.

The PVConverter covers the following applications:

  • Basic: One phase connection (dc) to the grid

  • 3 Phase Connection: Three Phase connection (ac) to the grid

Parameters and Connectors

Basic

The PVConverter has a dc connection ▶PVDC to the PV model and a dc connection Grid1 to the dc grid or via a phase tap a connection an ac grid. Lastly, the ▶MPP is the maximum-power-point-voltage signal from the photovoltaics system, which is used to control the photovoltaics model (see difference to real PV system).

To parameterize the PVConverter adjust the values for the converter efficiency etaConverter* and the number of phases PVPhase (PVPhase is 1 = dc, PVPhase is 3 = ac).

Model Background

MPP Tracking

The PV converter uses the resulting maximum-power-point-voltage ▶MPP to control the intermediate-circuit voltage on the DC-side. This ensures that the PV systems provides maximum electrical power output at all times. Normally, a PV system is controlled by a so called MPP tracker, a system regulating the intermediate-circuit voltage on the DC-side without knowing the actual available MPP-voltage and current. These trackers thus use measurements for voltage and current output for power regulation. These complex control algorithms are not included as to reduce system complexity in the provided controller model.

Why Do I Get An Initialization Error?

Internally, the model either uses a B6 - or B2-converter model. If the related maximum battery voltage exceeds a value of 0.9 times the effective grid voltage, the battery converter must be defined as a 3-phase converter. The maximum voltage of 3-phase converter is 2.34 times the effective grid voltage. Note that using a battery converter model as a single-phase converter, avoids high reactive power demands for voltage conversion. To configure the PV converter compare PV module data contained in the model data directory with the desired PV system configuration.
